I use bash.  However "ls" is not part of bash so the shell is
irrelevant.  What version of ls are you using?  I'll bet that
the system admin has aliased ls, or there are LS_OPTIONS set or
something.

type set at the prompt and send it to me, also send me the output
of the following commands:

uname -a
ls -alF ~
set | grep "^LS"
ls --version

Mine is:

2 capslock:~# ls --version
GNU fileutils 3.12 with color-ls patch 3.12.0.3
