Nevertheless, this is what happened:

Once I attempted to install OpenDOS on another machine, just to
see what would happen.

Soon after the bootstrap, it copied the setup to disk.
Then it just sat there, black screen, totally dead.
"Oh no, not another bug!" I thought.

This was the machine with the CL5436 graphics card in it.

Last month, I underwent the ritual of swapping graphics cards
around until win95 stopped crashing on that same machine, and I
ended up with the CL5436 PCI graphics card.

OpenDOS was already installed on my machine, and it wasn't until
I ran DISKOPT one day that it crashed. I booted clean and it still
crashed.

I did a full boot and SYSed the kernel back in case it was damaged
(happened before now..) but it didn't help.
I attempted to change the config.sys with guess what? EDIT!

EDIT crashed.
SETUP crashed.
I realised that the only link between all these was the newUI, and
dug up some old posts from this list about newUI problems.

Sure enough, when the newUI was disabled, everything worked again.

Exactly what chip do the other cirrus cards have?

The newUI switch must have been put there for a reason, so if anyone
knows what the newUI is doing that 'might-be-dangerous' let me know
and I'll see if I can write a program to test it.

Its not reprogramming the font, unless it is done it a very odd way
because other programs that do this work fine.
