If the filesystem is good enough to do that, I think it should be because
the user made it so.  I have no problem with a mapping where the user
would tell the computer "Open Mac Word Perfect files with c:\wp51\wp.exe". 
But imagine the nightmare of trying to do this automatically.  That, in my
opinion, would be too unreliable to work.
