If a device driver (or TSR) processed DOS calls with AH=71h by
looking at the directory entries (bypasing DOS), it would be
possible to add long filename support for OpenDOS, DRDOS and
even MSDOS 7 out of Win95 mode. For efficiency, the program
should be built into the cache I guess.

Even better, make a device driver that reads ext2fs and hpfs
partitions and makes these files available to DOS programs via
the same interface.

I can read long filenames under OpenDOS from VFAT or extfs (with
some limitations), but making them available to programs (allowing for
mixed use of old calls and new ones) seems a bit difficult. But if
there is enough interest I could take it further.
