Okay, so I might have brought it more dramatic than it really is, but
Carmack told in the interview, that their biggest profit is in licensing
the engine, not in the game itself.

Some imported American Computer mag.
I read it right after the release of Quake last year, they were asking some
info about Quake II.
Carmack told that they were gonna try and make realtime curves (nurbs or
something) and have rough surfaces with dents and all, in stead of your
normal flat textured polygon.
Then the interviewer asked what kind of Silicon Graphics we'd need for
that.
Carmack answered with the specs I posted earlier, then the interviewer
asked if he was kidding.
Carmacj answered with something like, that they're planning on releasing
Quake II at the end of 1998 (or "when it's done") and that people who want
to keep up with technology in software, should expect to also have to keep
up with hardware technology.
I think the magazine was "Computer + Video Games".
