If we don't reply to the mailing list, conversation would die, and 
would be replaced by just announcements.  If we had a newsgroup as 
well, that would be fine, but we don't.  If you want to reply to JUST 
the author, you can cut and paste the address into the To: field.  
This may inconvenience the senders of a very small number of 
messages, but most of us would rather send replies to the list.

If you can show me the followup button on my mail client, I'll do 
just that.

Just the most fully-featured freely available newsreader available 
for Windows.  Not all of us use Gnus/emacs, which is a fine package 
but still lags years behind other software in terms of usability.
