I was thinking more along the lines of software mixing in the
sound driver code. This could possibly be done outside the
kernel by using a "sound daemon". The daemon would have a
matching client program that would send a sound file to the
daemon, which would queue it, and mix it into any sounds allready
being played.
I would suspect that it would be very simple to come up with such
a program.
