I agree,  It should be a text file that is easy to read.  A relational db
would make uninstalls and installs faster, but if something goes wrong the
user probably won't be able to fix it.  With a text files if you
accidentally uninstall something yourself and the program refuses for some
reason to remove the entry, then you can go into the text file and edit it
yourself.
