The free Minix (2.0) requires IDE drives and an AT bus, given that,
an 8088 will run it.

If you have an XT, you need an earlier version (1.5), which is still
hoarded by Prentice-Hall.

Minix 1.5:

Title: Operating Systems: Design and Implementation
  Author: Andrew S. Tanenbaum
  Publisher: Prentice-Hall
  ISBN: 0-13-637406-9

Minix 2.0:

Author: Andrew S. Tanenbaum, Albert S. Woodhull
  Publisher: Prentice-Hall
  ISBN: 0-13-638677-6

ObOpenDOS:

I picked up a used copy of Borland C++ 2.0 (US$20) to solve my 16-bit
development problems. Any thoughts? Suggestions?
