I couldn't agree with you more.  Plug and play is more like
"plug and play around", or "plug and pray".  I still prefer, and
always will, to assign settings to my hardware manually.  This
way when something doesn't work, you can easily reassign
something rather than wondering what IRQ something is on, and if
it is the same as the last time you rebooted.  I'm somewhat
disappointed that when I upgrade to a pentium I'll be stuck with
PNP and probably also with Linux problems.

Lets hope that the Linux community comes up with a good solution,
and soon.
