I found out likewise when quicktime for windows dumped my emm386 support
for win31, all of a sudden my system refused to shift into high gear, I
was bogged down in standard mode!

ps, fixed it myself, found out by doing a 'win /3' it popped up the
enhanced icon and asked me if I wanted to use the current swap file, since
then, haven't had a problem.
