I have not seen a single post on this list from anyone saying that
they were going to take out DOS/BIOS writes from ANY programs.  The
only posts I've seen were to ADD direct screen writes as an option.
Perhaps you didn't read it carefully enough.  Caldera is the boss
anyways.  They will hardly ditch disabled users.  In fact if Caldera
removed "accessibility" features from the existing programs, I
personally would take that in a VERY negative way and I would turn
from a Caldera advocate to quite the opposite.  I think everyone on
this list will share that sentiment with me as well.

I'm going to check out QBASIC and see if I can get it to come up in a
non-direct write mode...

I looked at help and it looks like /B does black and white and /NOHI
disables hi colors for monitors that cant do it.  I just telneted to a
remote computer and am now telnetted back into my machine.  I just ran
QBASIC over a telnet session and it works fine (albeit very slow!!).
So if QBASIC runs over a telnet session, then the screen is obviously
being sent out my modem, and you should be able to run it with your
speech software.  Have you tried running QBASIC via serial link?
