Microsloth removed ASSIGN, SUBST, and JOIN from MS-DOS because they were
"complicated" and "archaic." They can still be found on the Supplemental
Disks, however, which may be found somewhere deep in the tangled forest
of ftp.microsoft.com. When I upgraded from DOS v3.11 to v6.22 (read: from
a really crappy computer to a newer one :) and found these commands
removed, I downloaded the Supplemental Disks ASAP. :)

If you can't find the Disks (as is likely) I can uuencode or mime it to you.
