It's just that 400 is the pin to pin distance in my symbol generator.
The is no special reason for 400, it just felt natural at the time.

For the moment I don't see any abvious use for your extension, the grid
as I experience it, is just for pin connecting ends and nets to line
nicely up. Everything else can be wherever it wants to be, especially
inside symbols. Perhaps if I'd use the standard you refer to, the 
situation might be different.
