The application runs on desktop Linux, and reads data from instruments
using the serial port. The user sets up a configuration file (in
docs/example.xml) describing  the external instruments. The GUI allows
the user to monitor the measurements in real-time. The GUI would also
save measurements  to a file, and allow the user to start and stop
recording.
A command line application that logs data to a file, using the same
configuration file as the GUI, looks useful.
I didn't envision any portion of the project running on a
microcontroller. But, the microcontroller could transmit the
measurements back to a Linux machine for storage on disk.
