My take on this matter is to always log to file, then possible present
it and/or process it. You get nowhere without raw data. From that log
file you can get the latest with tail, -s 0.1 => update every 0.1s
instead of every second.

tail -s 0.1 -F log | presenting_program

That also gives you a way to test your program, just feed it to your
stdin.
