This is the killer feature IMO. It's super low-level, but it is the key
enabler for many further highly desirable improvements. Finally they are
possible! It's great! :)

The new infrastructure is indeed a significant improvement!

I do think however that we may need a few release cycles to arrive on
actual "new-user-friendly" key assignments. Feedback from users helps
a lot here, so I am thinking about how to make this part especially
easy to contribute to. It's very central to the user experience, so
it would be nice to optimize for contributions here. Let's see. The
file format is in any case immediately understandable.
