This indeed looks like a Guile problem.

I don't recall the exact circumstances, but I had a problem once where 
Guile didn't handle UTF-8 strings correctly.  After some investigation, I 
found out that Guile expects you to set the encoding of an output port 
manually.  Adding the following line of code solved the problem for me:

(set-port-encoding! (current-output-port) "utf-8")
