I apologize if it's somewhere obvious and I just haven't found it, but, is
there any documentation for how the internals of pcb work? Something that
describes how the different types of things are represented in memory and
how all the different elements interact with each other?

There are some comments in the sources files themselves, but it can be a
little overwhelming to wade through everything when you don't know what the
big picture looks like.
