This is perfectly possibly in Gentoo linux by means of the SLOT system
.. its how I've had multiple versions of gcc installed at once.
Very handy!

It's most likely the way I'll be handling guile in gentoo, if that's not
already implemented as such - but for the reasons mentioned in the
article, there -shouldn't- be any problems with backward compatibility.
