The approach to assign unique refdes and pinnumber values if those are missing seems very good and already works well for networks. If the numbers have no meaning in schematics or symbol it would be better to leave them out.

Then thinking about gschem as a symbolic editor connecting symbol pins with lines or nets quite little is missing for it to be a really good editor for drawing schematics. Then using schematic for other purposes like creating a BOM, simulation or circuit board layout one approach would be to feedback values via attributes either written to the *.sch file or a separate file.
