Slotting actually overrides pinnumbers.

And slotting is not obsolete. I don't use it heavily for
components that provide multiple instances of the same
function, like 7400 or 7474, but I have started using it
extensively for things like monitoring.

I typically put an ADC to monitor voltages, currents,
temperatures, PLL voltages and maybe other things. At
the input of the ADC, there is a multiplexer like an
ADG731 (32 inputs) which selects the voltage which is
going to be measured.

For the multiplexer I have defined two symbols:
- a small, single pin symbol which has 32 slot
definitions. Instances of these symbols end up
being spread all over the design.
- another larger symbol with the rest of the chip
which typically ends up close to the ADC and
either a microcontroller or an FPGA.
