The bug only occurs if an empty library has explicitly been added using 
"component-library".  This is unfortunately the case with the standard 
library unless symbols have been added to /usr/share/gEDA/sym/local.

While I was at it, I took the time to push my patches for PCB.  gschem and 
PCB now both support arbitrary levels of subdirectories in the library.
