I recently pushed a set of patches which add support for arbitrary-depth 
symbol libraries to gschem (and prepared, but didn't yet find time to 
push, a similar set of patches for PCB).  Reading the messages, it seems 
to me that this bug might be related to these changes.  Could you please 
revert commits fb8b0a7 and 11de813 locally and see if the problem still 
occurs?
