gschem, at least 1.8.2, should use cairo, not GL.
The statement "to make pcb usable" of course is not really helpful for
debugging -- missing information is your hardware and driver and
behaviour of PCB program, and maybe behaviour of other GL enabled
software.
I had some trouble with PCB 2011 myself -- sluggish operation sometimes
-- but the reason may be my old closed source nvidia-driver (latest
divers do not support my old card.) and Gnome3. A test with pcb 2014
release was working, but it was a very short test.
