Thanks for giving this problem some thought. Now I've bumped into it, 
I'll note in my own operations manual a) to turn off pin numbering 
before exporting to gerber, and b) to always check the gerbers before 
sending them off.

 From my POV, it would be nice to see an option included for toggling 
whether the pin labels are [just GUI] or [GUI and output], with the 
default set to the first case :)
