problems with 1mm pitch components?

Yes, I suppose if I stayed with large pitch I'd be OK.

Ouch.  I had heard that a local rework house would attach a BGA package, 
one-off, without placing the rest of the board, for something like 
$50-$75.  I never followed up, though.
