It contained data, but it looked like PCB didn't understand its
contents...but it produced no error messages. (see below)

Ahh, thank heaven, no...The file contained data, and a first glance
at it looked fine.

Nope...this is a run from one minute to the next, with the same PCB
binary.

I always run it from the command line. It said nothing at all about
this file. That was why I was concerned. :-/
The other weird thing...When it's in its "not displaying anything"
state, I can run DRC, and it complains about a known DRC problem on the
board (insufficient copper annulus on three holes), and yet nothing is
displayed in the board editing window.
Very strange!
But, see my other email, everything is ok now.
