One benefit would be it being a start.

Just marking track connections with different net tags is easy to 
implement and lacking these tags, the old behaviour can take over. I.e. 
highlight shorts detected by net tags more than "generic" ones.

Once people can experiment with this, opinions should get clearer on 
which automatic mechanisms are helpful and which not.
