IMHO, a rubberband approach would be good for this task too. Imagine, all 
tracks are made of tensioned rubber. Then you let go of the components.

For extra nerdiness, allow the components to adjust their angle, too :-) 

Seriously, such a automatic layout shrinking algorithm may be a winner in 
many real world scenarios.
