This is a bug. Alt+S should increase the hole size. Alt-* brings up the 
menues for me, too. This started a few months ago. I guess this GTK or 
even the window manager interfering with the actual application. (This is 
xfce, here). Maybe, the "correct" solution is to not use Alt with characters 
that also  stand for menu shortcuts.

BTW, Alt+Shift+S does work and decreases the hole size as expected.
