Can you explain what you mean ?

That would be a change to pcb, we are still discussing what can be done 
at the schematic level.

Can't you just do a simple

$ ln -sf new.sym 743.sym

and only use 743.sym in your schematics, dito for pcb, plus some kind
of update the board.
