Because the majority of new developers with the skillset and motivation to
contribute will end up working on different, competing projects.  Software is
like fish, if it doesn't keep swimming it dies.  Suppose gtk changes enough
that gschem needs rework, for example.  Unless you want to do all that sort
of work yourself you need a viable developer community.  Meanwhile other
projects will start to develop simulators etc.  Its not really a big or
challenging deal to tack a few attributes only parts to support simulation,
compared to the trouble of having decent GUIs and consistent workflow etc.

Well, I guess all I can say to that is add me to the list of people who have
successfully made a number of boards with it.

Don't get me wrong, I also like the fact that you can pipe things to ngspice
instead of pcb, I've done it, its great, but its not going to get you the
majority of new users, or probably even a viable minority of them.
