This sound like the mil-to-nm conversion is the culprit.

IIRC, you can access the repo via gitweb. This works entirely on port
80, i.e. general worldwideweb. There is a http backend to git. Maybe,
the admin of geda-project took the time to set up apache for it. This
service comes handy, if you don't to allow ssh to everyone, who should
have push permission to the repository.
