Indeed not very surprising and I see no problem either.

Let's compare this to gcc, the C compiler. About everybody uses it to  
create binaries from source code. Still a few use it to only  
preprocess source code and gcc happily supports this. You can also  
create binaries from modified preprocessed sources. One just has to  
keep the intermediate files intact and I see no efforts to make them  
going away in gEDA.

Aligning gschem and pcb and both to modern GUI guidelines just means  
getting a more usable user interface, not more, not less. The files  
created by this user interface are untouched by this process.

BTW., even John D's schematics are processed into PCBs. I find it  
unfortunate they don't use gEDA's pcb for this task.
