View->Displayed Element Name->Description

that's the "footprint name" that the importer knows about.

Change it to anything different (i.e. delete a char or append "x"),
and it will do a footprint update, at least pcb's File->Import will.
I thing gnetlist will replace the footprint, but not keep it in the
same place.

You should try out pcb's File->Import if your version has it, it's
much better at live and in-place updates that gsch2pcb.
