For some time I have had problems building gschem.

I could co-maintain core and lesstif hid pcb parts and supporting
programs.

lepton and pcb-rnd are good alternatives.

My critisism of pcb-rnd is that the files becomes very large compared
to pcb files, which makes it burdensome to manually go into the
files and verify and debug the programs you might write generating
pcb-rnd file format; and yes, it is mostly a me problem.
