Ah, yes, that was indeed the problem. Building and installing geda-gaf 
now works, but gschem throws an error message when I try to start it:

    $ gschem
    gschem: error while loading shared libraries: libgedacairo.so.1:
    cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Where can I find libgedacairo? And how do I install it?
