Dmitry,

That's two things I overlooked! I didn't notice that line 42, which 
tells me there is a second gafrc in my home directory where it shouldn't 
be. The root problem was that I copied my gafrc to the home directory 
yesterday in order to attach it to another posting. I also overlooked my 
comment dated 2018 in the gafrc file about not doing that very thing! I 
now have a warning notice at the top never to do this again - ever! I 
did remove the ~/gafrc copy and gschem is working normally now. I still 
have a couple of the symbol used more than once warnings in my schematic 
to resolve, but that is easy to handle in the course of creating the 
schematic.
