Another option is that, in Linux anyway, the gschem "File Open" dialog 
allows multiple files to be selected by using the standard shift and 
Ctrl options. When the dialog is closed, the selected files are all 
opened and available, and the page manager has them all listed.

I have not tried it, but are wildcards (*,?) available on the command line?
If so, it could simplify the command line. i.e.:

     $ gschem toplevel_*.sch

Also, I would think some creative use of "find" in a script could 
dynamically create the command line arguments.
