Hi all,

the raw import of gedasymbols has finished. This means all footprints and 
symbols are imported and initial metadata generated - all items are 
searchable using the parametric search.

The number of items imported from gedasymbols may decrease in the future: 
some items have missing or unclear licensing terms. I will contact the 
authors; long term I will need to remove the items where I can't clear the 
license.

(The current number is about 1000 items less than the number of 
footprints+symbols on gedasymbols. The reason is that I decided not to 
import Erich's footprints converted from the kicad lib for now. Instead, I 
will import the kicad lib directly (as edakrill can host and automatically 
convert kicad footprints). The advantage of this is that we don't do 
two-step kicad->pcb->* conversion where we can do a one-step kicad->* 
conversion.)

Next steps:

  - a lot of optimization on the scripts - now that we have a biggish 
database it's easier to see which parts are slow (yup, the search scrpt is 
slow)

  - a lot more documentation, especially about tags the system depends on

  - more metadata; user contribution is welcome on this one

  - start importing other footprint and symbol sources

  - write metadata for the tools/scripts imported from gedasymbols (needs 
user contribution)


Gedasymbols.org: I think there's no decision so the implicit 1 has 
happened: I have an md5 index on what I've imported and will import new 
items from time to time but the process is slow and manual so expect new 
gedasymbols items to show up on edakrill with great delay (days, weeks or 
even months).
