The problem is that gEDA isn=92t a fixed, unified tool with a single way =
to do things. It=92s a collection of *customizable* tools. gEDA=92s =
great success has been the ability to make a netlist for any purpose =
with a modest amount of Scheme coding. That=92s how it=92s able to =
support pcb, which was not part of gEDA originally. It supports many =
other flows as well.
The loudest complaint about this has been that the capability is only =
available to people who can code Scheme. Roland=92s =93xorn=94 approach =
might fix this, except so far I don=92t believe any users have come =
forth to try it. Until that happens, I consider it an experiment in =
progress. I=92m not particularly motivated to try it: Xorn looks like =
the tool the Gostak uses to distim the doshes, and its best developed =
API seems to be Python. While I have been doing image processing in =
Python lately, I prefer Scheme for structural manipulations of data.
Vladimir and Peter have been proceeding more conservatively, extending =
the Scheme scripting capabilities that we have successfully exploited =
for years. This looks more promising to me. This judgement could change =
if I saw Roland=92s approach fostering a bunch of user-contributed =
scripts, but right now it looks like Rolands=92s show. He=92s very, very =
productive with his tool, but can anybody else be?
