I frequently start with a BOM also. Many customers have a cost target or want a unit cost
upfront. This BOM may contain the wrong values or parts, but they function as cost
placeholders.

It would be nice if the BOM upfront process was smoother and/or saved time. If the customer
decides not to proceed, then this time isn’t compensated. :(

The following is how it usually rolls:

1. Create prelim BOM
	a. Create prelim BOM and estimate unit cost
	b. Estimate labor
	c. Estimate additional materials
2. Send estimate to person creating SOW or proposal
2. Wait
3. Wait
4. Wait
5. Draft schematics and create heavy symbols
6. Send schematics, netlist and BOM to PCB designer
7. Upload BOM to Digikey BOM manager and order parts
8. Receive gerbers from PCB designer, review, and send for fabrication
9. Express ship any last minute BOM changes
10. Assemble
11. Test
12. Run second revision if necessary
13. Handoff to manufacturing
14. Manufacturing support
