I found the trouble was not in the compilation, just not enough hints about what could be wrong.

I had the env variable GEDADATA=/opt/geda/share/gEDA.

Losing that old setting allowed latest git gschem configured default to run.  In that case,
the share/gEDA folder was at:
/usr/local/share/gEDA
