My two centiEUR: Long time ago we have decided to get into open source scene and since I was working for Electronics magazine at the time, it was logical to look into CAD and start using it. There is lot to be said for "free" CAD that your readers can use to load your design and make a board, edit it etc. So we looked into all known choices and at the time, came to the conclusion that gEDA+PCB were, sucky as the were, only choices worth mentioning. KiCAD came later, so I've checked that also. There are two deal-breakers for me: - Program's interface and workflow just doesn't click with me. It feels like swallowing a cactus. I just don't feel like my hands are free, when working with it. - KiCAD is based on C++, which means heaps and loads of object pr0n. After a while, I learned to understand gEDA/PCB sources. Staring into KiCAD's just gave me headache. At present, I have two versions of PCB on the system. One that is based on latest official version, and another, that is generated from my branch of pcb-git sources. That one I can generate simply by starting projerct build in CodeLite. I get new PCB in my user directory and lately, this is the version that I use most often. Until now, I didn't do big changes on it, but that is changing exponentially. It has additional layers and it is translated to our language, and now has some very annoying bugs killed, like that one for polygon holes,etc. With PCB, however faulty it is, I have feeling of having control over usage and development. With KiCAD, I don't. Not to mention that those object oriented projects usually end up being slow and overly depending on sh*tload components and conditions your particular system doesn't have. When I see eg boost as a dependency of some package , I usually start looking for an alternative. I intend to use PCB as a canvas for my version. Until then, I intend to participate in bug hunts and tweak sessions in this one. While using it, of course.
