Usually I use aptitude and 'L' (F10 + Package->Reinstall), but IIRC 'apt-get install --reinstall package-name' does the same. 3) Update your system - use the latest stable Debian version "Jessie". BTW, I know several guile packages may coexist on your system. The question is which of them is used to build other programs. I don't know, what headers are used if you have, say, a guile-*-dev Debian package and your own guile build of some version with headers installed somewhere else. There should be, again, an order of precedence where the compiler is looking for headers, and I suspect, you'll have to somehow clearly tell it what header to use in such a case.
