Pins can point to any direction and can have any length. There is just 
one constraint: The sensitive end of the pin must coincide with a grid 
point. Else, it is impossible to connect a net.

To draw the lose end of the pin to some arbitrary position:

1) switch to a very fine grid in the grid dialogue.
   Options -> Snap_grid_spacing
(BTW, in current git head the accel combo to access this dialog is 
broken) 

2) change Snap_Size to 10 or even 1. The change should be reflected in 
the status line at the bottom of the window.

3) drag the end of the pin to a visually pleasing position.

4) make sure to change the grid back to the original 100. Else you may 
place other objects off grid, too.

The sensitive points of the pins must be at grid points. This might 
prevent you from placing the pins at exactly the "right" point.

The manual suggests pin length 300. There is no technical reason for 
it, just style. Pins can be any length and any direction. Pin legth 
can even be 0.
