Every object drawn end up on a layer as one or more drawing primitives. Layers basically have two colors if there should be material or not.

The objects which should be drawn on the layers are however grouped in for example a footprint/element.

Both layers and available drawing primitives are rather OK. There are however limitations on how it is possible to use drawing primitives inside element/footprint/via/pin and it is not possible reference predefined via/pin/pad. It would also be nice if objects could be marked as belonging to a sub layout so they could be selected and moved/copied.
