Perhaps a > popup when user tries to go into line (etc.) mode or enables these > modes while in line etc. mode The problem is, if you follow good GUI design, you disable buttons that can't be used at the moment, which means you can't trigger a popup from that button - because it's disabled. I assume tool tips will still work as they don't require a button press, but who knows what you can get away with in gtk.
