Like DJ, I like the parts that Digi-Key categorizes as Tactile Switches
(6069 items).

E-Switch TL1105AF100Q, over 12000 on the shelf at Digi-Key,
PCB footprint attached.

Just use standard 1206, 0805, or even 0603 footprints.
Here's one simple on-the-shelf 1206 part: Lumex SML-LX1206GC-TR.
I've started moving to smaller sizes.

Somehow I got in the habit of using MTA-156 connectors for this.
It does require you to have and use a crimping tool for the cable
end, but it's simple, cheap, "transparent", maintainable, robust, ...
Lots of options in pin count.  Friction lock is good.
